Cloverfield Review
January 22, 2008
Cloverfield
4/5
I am going to try to keep this review as ‘spoiler-free’ as possible, but if you want surprises, stop reading now.
Cloverfield, if you have been living under a rock, is the much ballyhooed new project from J.J. Abrams. It is a monster movie shot from a single camera, to chilling results.
The film takes place in Midtown and Manhattan, while the monster is destroying the city. For those worried about seeing the monster, you see more of it than i would have cared to, but the real scares are that of the ‘parasites’ that fall off the monster during the attack.
a couple tips for seeing Cloverfield:
Sit as far back as possible, unless you enjoy motion sickness.
Pay close attention to the final scene.
Stay through the credits.

I’ll try and keep this up to date as the story develops.

Radiohead Announce Environmentally Sound North American Tour
January 9, 2008Via pitchfork
There are three essential components to any respectable Pitchfork News tour story– dates, cities, and venues– but when your band is called Radiohead, you can get away with announcing them one at a time.
Today Radiohead confirmed that they are indeed coming to North America in the near future, and provided folks with a handy list of just which cities they’ll visit. No dates, no venues, just cities. Did yours make the cut? Have a look (arranged alphabetically):
Atlanta
Boston
Charlotte
Chicago
Cleveland
Dallas
Houston
Indianapolis
Los Angeles
Miami
Montreal
New York
Philadelphia
San Diego
San Francisco
Santa Barbara
Seattle
St. Louis
Tampa
Toronto
Vancouver
Washington, DC
The cities listed above will be graced by the men of Radiohead in two waves, the first popping off before that oft-reported European jaunt (which begins June 6), and the second taking place sometime after said jaunt ends (on July 8).
As the guys explained on Dead Air Space late last month, they’ve been working with environmental group Best Foot Forward to reduce their carbon emissions on this forthcoming tour, which may go some to explain why it’s taking them a minute to put it all together. They also provided some pointers on how YOU can help. Observe:
* If average car occupancy increased from 2.2 to 3, the whole tour’s overall CO2 output would be reduced by 22%.
* Halving fans flying would reduce overall CO2 consumption by 5%
* And if 10% of car users travelled by bus it would reduce CO2 emissions by 7%
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead
4.5/5
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is the story of two brothers botched robbery of their parents jewelry store, and the events that followed. it stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei. and Albert Finney as their father. The film sets out to show just how slimy and terrible people can be. Without revealing too much, their father spends the film on a manhunt, only to find out the one he is looking for is his own son. Everyone in this movie has some horrible qualities, but that only lends itself to the depth and believability of the characters. This is by no means a ‘popcorn flick’ and has no hollywood resolution or happy ending.
This film is another notch on Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s already impressive belt, and while robbed of a golden globe nod, i think his performance was oscar-worthy. The cinematography was outstanding, and gave a real feel of the hopelessness of the actors on screen. The film has an out of order timeline, a’la Tarantino, which doesn’t bother me but the way the editor decided to show passage of time. He used these jittery little cuts that went back and forth between the two scenes, and it got old quick.
The film’s title comes from the Irish saying ” May you be in Heaven half an hour, before the Devil knows you’re dead”, and fits it perfectly. While the golden globes overlooked it, and the academy may; this is a film worth seeing.
